Mass Spectrometer Inlet
Mass Spectrometer Inlet
New Objective, Inc
Objective: Create an inlet for a mass spectrometer with heat control and 3-axis movement.
Skills Used:
Design for manufacturability - able to be constructed in in-house production line
3-axis CNC - automating with Mastercam
Glass bead blasting for polish finish
Handling high voltage applications
Creating SOP for production line
Heat transfer principles, before taking heat transfer class
Personal Objective: Make design intuitive to use and aesthetically pleasing.
Design Constraints:
Ability to be used with the two most common mass spectrometers: Thermo Fisher and AB Sciex
Maintain temperature at base plate to less than 40 degrees Celsius
Manufacturable in available production line
Design Process:
Designed system based on initial heat transfer research
Tested insulator effectiveness
Machined using 3-axis CNC mill
Final Solution:
6061 Aluminum base plate; 9.2 mm thickness PTFE insulator
3-axis micrometer-positioning linear actuator
Creation of SOP with low-volume production implementation
